McDONALD’S® FUNDS $100,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOUR HISPANIC
STUDENTS
RMHC®/HACER® Awards More Than $17.9 Million in 23-year Commitment
to Higher Education
Oak Brook, IL (June 26, 2008) –
McDonald’s announced today the selection of four Hispanic high
school seniors who will each receive a college scholarship of
$100,000 to fulfill their college dreams. The students -- selected
for their academic achievement, financial need and community
service -- will be awarded $25,000 per year for the next four
years beginning this fall.
"McDonald’s provided the funding for the four national Ronald
McDonald House Charities®/Hispanic American Commitment to Education
Resources® (RMHC®/HACER®) scholarships this year to build on
our 23-year commitment to help Hispanic students achieve their
college dreams,” said Cristina Vilella, Director of Marketing,
McDonald’s USA. "We know there are a lot of talented students
in our community who are unable to attend college because of
financial constraints. We want to support them financially so
they can stay focused on their education.”
The four scholarship recipients are:
· Brigitte Morales, Miami,
FL, attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology majoring
in Chemical Engineering
· Samuel A.
Cruz, Union City, NJ, attending Ramapo College majoring
in Biochemistry
· Brian Campos, Brooklyn,
NY, attending Harvard University majoring in Neurobiology
· Maira Mercado, Riverside,
CA, attending Claremont McKenna College majoring in Economics
and Mathematics
“Now that I have this $100,000 scholarship, I know I’m going
to MIT and I won’t have to worry so much about financing my studies.
This scholarship is making my dreams come true!” said Brigitte
Morales.
Since 1985, RMHC/HACER has awarded more than $17.9 million in
scholarships to more than 12,000 Hispanic students in the U.S.
RMHC/HACER is a program of Ronald McDonald House Charities and
its local chapters, which provide scholarships in several regions
of the country. This is the first year the scholarships are awarded
to students on a national level. The program is supported through
the efforts of McDonald’s owner/operators, local and national
community leaders and individual donors.
In addition to supporting the scholarship program, McDonald’s
collaborates with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to present an
annual series of free, bilingual college workshops to provide
students and their families with essential college preparation
information to help students achieve their educational goals.
In 2007, 4,000 parents and students participated in these workshops.
This year the workshops will be held in the fall in Denver, CO;
Phoenix, AZ, Indianapolis, IN, Atlanta, GA, El Paso, TX, Boston
MS, Lynwood, CA, Newark, NJ, Orlando, FL, San Jose, CA and Chicago,
IL.

McDONALD’S® TURNS
TO CUSTOMERS FOR NEW SPIN ON FAMOUS BIG MAC® CHANT
Big Mac’s 40th Anniversary Celebration Continues with Fresh
Mix
Oak Brook, IL (June 23, 2008) –
McDonald’s USA launched a national casting call today inviting
consumers to submit a video or audio remix of the popular Big
Mac chant on MySpace.com/BigMacChant.
The winning remix will be featured in a McDonald's Big Mac TV
commercial that will air at the end of July. Semi-finalists will
be selected by a panel of judges and the winner will be chosen
through an online vote by July 22.*
Keith Reinhard, Chairman Emeritus of DDB Worldwide, and his creative
group at Needham Harper & Steers developed the famous "Twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettuce
cheesepicklesonionsonasesameseedbun®" Big Mac jingle in
1974. Now, to continue the celebration of the sandwich’s 40th
anniversary, McDonald’s is giving consumers a chance to rediscover
their love of the Big Mac with a fresh new twist.
"For 40 years, the Big Mac has been a familiar favorite
not only to our guests in the United States, but around the world," said
Neil Golden, chief marketing officer, McDonald's USA. "To
share in the pride we have for our flagship sandwich, we're inviting
our customers to join in the fun and add their own contemporary
touch to the famous tongue-twister that celebrates the quality
ingredients in our iconic sandwich."
Jim "MJ" Delligatti, one of McDonald’s founder Ray
Kroc’s earliest franchisees, invented the Big Mac in his
Uniontown, Pa. restaurant and introduced it for 45 cents in 1967.
Consisting of two 100% all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce,
cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame-seed bun, the Big Mac quickly
gained popularity and was introduced on McDonald’s national menu
in 1968.
To kick-off the year-long anniversary celebration last August,
Delligatti and his family officially opened the doors to the
McDonald’s Big Mac Museum Restaurant – "the most tasteful
museum in the world" – in North Huntingdon, Pa. The combo
museum/restaurant features the world’s largest Big Mac statue
(measuring 14 feet high and 12 feet wide), and hundreds of historic
artifacts and high-tech exhibits that celebrate the Big Mac.
The museum/restaurant is one of 18 McDonald’s restaurants owned
and operated by M&J Management, a three-generation family
business and McDonald’s franchise organization for 50 years.
Today, more than 500 million Big Mac sandwiches are sold each
year in America alone. The sandwich is sold in more than 100
countries and, because of its global presence, inspired The Economist
Magazine's "Big Mac Index," an annual comparison of
foreign currency values against the U.S. dollar.
